Carpe Diem by Simple Stories - Personal Organiser - Review

At PlannerCon Europe a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Sherman Crowell and his team who are the owners of Simple Stories based in Utah, USA.

We had a couple of discussions over the weekend which resulted in them agreeing to sending me some samples of their planners to review.

Their range is quite large covering not only ring bound planners, but also coil/spiral bound and travellers notebook styles too. The covers come in plain colours and a variety of patterned ones too, so there is something for everyones tastes I would say.

Their range includes a selection of inserts, stickers and other essential accessories, which you can purchase for your Carpe Diem planner or other brand of planner/organiser.

So this is the first of two reviews that are coming up in the next week or two.

We start with the Personal size organiser boxed set in Mint Vintage Floral design.

The planner comes in a presentation style box as shown here.

The reverse side of the box details the full contents with illustrations as well.

Removing the planner from the box

And then removing the card contents band to get a closer look at the design.

The planner is made from a simulated leather, it appears to be well made and will wipe clean should you get any spills on it or a drink leaking in your bag etc.

The design is continuous on to the reverse of the planner cover.

The interior is finished in a complementary colour.

The rings measure 26mm internal diameter (just over 1 inch in old money!) they are gold coloured finish. The ones fitted to the sample closed with a reassuring snap with no ring gaps or mis-alignment.

The front inside cover features a secretarial pocket along with three card pockets of different heights for business cards and other essentials you might want to carry.

The rear inside cover has a notepad slot with a full height slip pocket behind it. There is also a fully elasticated pen loop behind the clasp in a matching colour.

The organiser comes with a full set of inserts. These are undated, they include enough weekly inserts to cover 60 weeks, as well we 12 months of month per view inserts.

As you can see the design is simple and functional leaving you plenty of scope to decorate the pages if you wish to do so or just to use them as they are.

They allow equal space for each day which is always a plus point for me, with a notes section at the end of the week.

It is important to note that the inserts measure 172mm high by 103mm wide, this is in common with other USA organiser page sizes. Filofax page size is 171mm by 95mm, so the Carpe-Diem organiser will take wider page sizes if you wish to use them.

Whilst the weekly pages are Monday start, the monthly ones adopted a Sunday start. I know some people that prefer this combination rather than Monday or Sunday start for both.

The Monthly pages do have a small amount of decoration at the top of the page. But they allow the full use of the daily boxes and there is also plenty of space in the final column for notes too.

Each monthly tabbed divider has a different design on it.

Also each month is preceded by a page with notes and reminders for the month, birthdays etc.

The monthly tabs are a generous size which will help you finding a particular date or day to add notes and reminders quickly.

The insert set comes with three pages of stickers, quite a mixture of useful ones for highlighting events and tasks on different days. Additional sheets of these are available from the on-line store.

Simple Stories products are sold world wide through a range of sellers. You can find your local one using the Store Locator on their website.

Thank you to Simple Stories for supplying the sample boxed set.

Brand Stretch - How to save a Dodo - PlannerCon Europe - Rebecca

Thank you to Rebecca from DodoPad for sharing her talk from PlannerCon Europe with us.

Another video for your viewing pleasure! In case you missed my talk 'Brand Stretch - How to save a Dodo' at PCE - here it is with audio - recorded in my office so the sound isn't perfect...and this was the first time I have ever done anything like this! It lasts just under 30 mins so make a cup of tea or coffee of whatever takes your fancy :) and settle down and my apologies for its imperfections...

Thanks to Steve Morton for his help turning it into a video and to my laptop for not totally crashing with the volume of MB!!

Next time we have PlannerCon Europe, I'm hoping we can avoid clashes between talks and product launches!

Free For All Friday No. 470

I was scratching around for a theme for this weeks post and the solution suddenly came in to my head... so quick before I forget it, I have to get to my computer and get it entered... otherwise I will forget it!

So inspired by a You Tuber - Casey Neistat, who by the way has no connection what so ever to planning or organisers!

'What is your biggest challenge each day or each week that your organiser helps you with? '

However, it is Friday so of course you are welcome to discuss anything organiser related.

Customising Philofaxy Diary Inserts

It was lovely when a few people at PlannerCon Europe showed me their organisers and how they are using the Philofaxy inserts. Or if they saw mine and asked 'Which Etsy store sells that insert you are using?' and I pointed out they are Philofaxy ones!

So here are some simple hints and tips on using our inserts and making them your own.
  1. Go to the Diary Insert page and find the insert you like the most.
  2. Either download the Word or PDF one for the year you want if you want to use it as it is. And then print it. Or
  3. Download the source files the Word and Excel files you will need both.
  4. Open the Excel file and set the Cell A2 to the correct start date for the particular insert you are modifying. The spreadsheet should fully update from just changing that one cell. Save the file and exit Excel
  5. Open the Word file and make what ever changes you wish to make such as font, line colour etc. Save the file.
  6. Perform the mail merge to a new file.
  7. In the new file you might need to insert a page break at the start of the first page to force a blank page at the beginning so that your insert is printed on the correct pages. Remember even numbered pages (2,4,6 etc) are all left hand pages, and odd numbered pages (1,3,5 etc) are all right hand pages once printed and inserted in to your organiser. So the page break is required for inserts such as week per view (week on 2 pages), month per view (month on 2 pages) etc.
  8. To make sure your pages all have the correct margins you need to find all of the section breaks (^b ) in the new document and replace them with nothing, just leave the replace field empty.
  9. Save your new file with a year filename assuming you are happy with the result, otherwise don't save it, go back to step 5 and re-edit your Word file and repeat the process from there until you are happy with the result.
  10. Print out your inserts and punch them.
Simple really!

On the Diary Insert page you will find some tutorial videos covering different versions of Word/Office that will take you through the ten steps above.

Some printing tips.
  1. Read this post for tips on printing A5 and Personal inserts.
  2. Read this post for tips on printing A6 inserts
  3. Always print your files in normal order not reverse order, some printers call the print order collation, observing what pages are being printed first you will know which order it is being printed in.
  4. Remember if you aren't using booklet print when printing A5 inserts that you have to scale the file to 71% to print direct on to A5 size paper.
  5. If you are printing on to A6 size paper you need to scale by 50%.
Please remember you can not use our designs for commercial gain, even if you have changed them with different fonts etc. Thank you.

Retailer Under The Spotlight - Gribulle

It was a pleasure to meet all the retailers at PlannerCon Europe back in October, but even more so to connect with the smaller retailers as well.

I enjoyed chatting with Maud who owns the ETSY shop Gribulle

Maud is based near Paris, ship wolrdwide.

She make inserts on 100gsm FSC Clairefontaine Paper and also on 120gsm shimmer Clairefontaine paper.

Maud has A5 and Personal sizes for now, punched (or not by request), but she is thinking of expanding to little notebooks. Probably Filofax equivalent of B6, Pocket and Mini.

They all come undated and there are several layouts :
  • Notes,
  • Day on 1 page,
  • Week on 4, 2, or 1 page,
  • Month on 1 or 2 pages,
  • There is also an extended version of the week on 2 pages and the month on 2 pages for the A5 format.
They all come in English and French, and toner printed or foiled (gold, silver, rose gold, gold holo, silver holo incoming, gold glitter and silver glitter for now, but Maud intends to expand to other colours like pink, blue, green, purple, red, etc).

Here are some examples of the inserts available:

Filofax closing its registration scheme

I'm sure you have all seen this registration page in the front of a Filofax Diary insert.

Last week the Filofax website got an update, a fairly substantial update it seems.

One thing I noticed in the 'My account' section of the site was that the 'My Organisers' tab had disappeared. Thinking that this might just be a glitch with the site update I made some enquiries.

I got the following email back from them this week.
Thank you for your email and enquiry to register your Filofax Organiser.
After carefully reviewing the Organiser registration, and the response that we receive, Filofax (including filofax.com and filofaxusa.com) have taken the decision to no longer offer this service. Organiser registration will now not be part of the ‘My Account' section of our websites.
We have also had to take into consideration renewing all our personal data policies ahead of the General Data Protection Regulation changes which come into effect in May 2018.
So guard your organisers, there will no longer be a way for them to be returned to you via Filofax in exchange for a voucher.

If you're reading this, you're probably the kind of person who likes receiving a new organizer as a gift. Maybe a fancy leather one that you wouldn't buy for yourself.

But have you ever given one as a gift, perhaps in the hopes that the recipient would enjoy it, maybe become a bit more organized as a result?

How did that work out? I've noticed that there are some people who use organizers and those who don't. I've never been able to convert one of the latter type by giving them a Filofax, no matter how beautiful.

Of course, since it's Friday, feel free to share any other ring-bound organizer experiences!

Choosing or Designing the Perfect Planner - Audio Only Edition

This was the topic for my talk/presentation at PlannerCon Europe 2017 which was held in Brussels on 28/29 October 2017.

My talk wasn't filmed in full as far as I know, so I decided to record a voice over to my slides so that more people could enjoy the full talk.

Whilst this isn't an exact recording of my talk, the beginning is more or less the same and the essential parts of my talk are very similar to the one I presented at PlannerCon Europe.

This is the audio only edition, you can listen via iTunes, download it direct or via MixCloud.

The PDF of the presentation is also available to download from Philofaxy.

Audio Download : PlannerconEuropeTalk.mp3
Presentation PDF: PlannerconEurope.pdf

I hope you enjoy it.

The video version of this presentation has been published here.
